This is my friend, Merle Gold. We take classes together with Anne-Marie Mink--our brilliant Zumba Gold teacher here in the Hudson Valley.
Yesterday, I brought a basket of zucchini to class with me. The garden at La Belle Farm has done very well this year and so I decided to share the bounty. Then, in the middle of class, some of the ladies realized they had forgotten their hand weights. This happens all the time, but because we had plenty of zucchini on hand, several decided to use them as substitute hand weights. So, here you see Merle “pumping iron” with her zucchini hand weights. She's pretty funny. She asked me to take her photograph and of course, I obliged. Merle and I had a a great time trying out different poses. We took the photo shoot very seriously. We wanted to get it just right. No matter that I’m taking a picture of a femme d’un certain age dancing around with a pair of zucchinis—no, because we were committed. We were serious. We were making art!
I believe that this intersection between the silly and the serious is not only the secret to comedy, but it’s the secret to art. And even, political action.
Creative Friends--we are living in a time when we need to muster all our gifts to survive. We cannot let ourselves be defeated. We cannot lose our sense of imagnation and play. Being ridiculous and silly and laughing is in itself an important form of rebellion. And it’s also a survival technique. Knowing this, creative ones—your assignment for this week is to do something seriously ridiculous.
Love,
Jamie
