Look at this couple. Those dreamy eyes. The girl’s hand gently reaching for the boy’s bearded chin. Her dress, filled with hearts. His red sweater. Oh, and those smiles. Dreamy.
This is a photograph of my daughter and son-in-law, taken many years ago. I had the great honor of witnessing their budding romance and then the blooming--flowers bursting forth in the summer sun.
This is what love does, my friends. It makes anything seem possible. You can fly and float, buoyed by the power of love. And if tended to, this enchantment can guide you through your entire life.
However, every one of us will face challenges and occasionally bump into the unexpected. We may find ourselves confused, lost in a new paradigm.
In this way, love is a lot like art. You think you’re all set--your novel has a rock-solid plot and you’ve hit the climactic moment. Your song has a strong melody, lyrics to carry it down that rolling river. You’ve sold your first landscape before the paint is even dry and you’ve got three more on the way. Your dance has gone viral. You’re heating up the internet. You’ve arrived at the Land of Good ‘n Plenty.
Until one day—Good ‘n Plenty just isn’t what you really want, and you find yourself strangely adrift.
Creative Friends—No matter how many years you’ve worked and honed your craft, there will be days of tumult, uncertainty.
But, know this—there are lessons to be learned in the midst of confusion. What is lost will be found. Have faith, because the well is never truly dry. Keep your heart open. Spring will return, and with it, the healing powers of rain.
Chop wood, carry water. Stay dreamy. And believe in love.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
Love,
Jamie
