I'm obsessed with luggage at the moment--mainly because I'm in the market for a new suitcase. I'm off to Paris in September and my old suitcase is kind of broken.
And so I've been looking around and I've found myself seduced by those hard side spinny suitcases. However, after a little research, I've found that they're actually not really better than the soft-side suitcases, unless you're lugging your stuff through the snow and slush in which case the hard-sided ones will keep things dry.
As it turns out the standard soft side comes with the full turn-around spin and can expand as well as accommodate odd shapes, like scuba diving equipment! (Although, to be clear, I have no intention of traveling to Paris with scuba diving equipment). But I must admit I am thrilled that I can stick with the old-fashioned tried and true soft side suitcase.
I love Away's new advertisement. I found the video on Instagram and then again just last week on the big screens at Penn Station.
The ad features the fashion influencer, writer/model/ex-girlfriend to the Sartorialist--the one and only Jenny Walton. It also features my favorite art critic and personal hero, Jerry Saltz.
This little video gave me goosebumps, because all the people in it are known for being gentle, nice and highly creative. I thought--wow. This may be just a whisper in the wind right now, but I can feel the culture changing.
In fact, I can feel the start of a soft revolution taking shape.
Yes, that's right. A revolution. Let's march and protest and get really angry and come up with nasty bon mots to hurl at our hard side enemies!
Just kidding.
Anyway, soft sided people are not the type to hurl things at other people.
Creative friends--your assignment for this week is to embrace your soft side. Keep an eye out for those dreamy souls who share your vision and also want to make the world a more inhabitable, peaceful, and creative place. And, go ahead and get distracted by butterflies.
By the way, this post is not an advertisement for Away and their Soft side Collection. I don't believe in endorsing things willy-nilly! Well, except maybe Jerry Saltz's book How to be an Artist. I endorse that.
Love,
Jamie
