How to Carry a Handbag the French Woman Way

French Secret #37
French Women carry their handbag as if it were an adorable basket.

It's true, French Women do not sling their bags over their shoulders where it's hidden from view, but rather they will carry their bag in the crook of their arm.  This way, a woman's hands are free to wave to friends, and show off her delicate wrist and slender fingers.
How do you carry your bag?  And can you tell me about other ways to show off pretty hands?
I'd love to know all about it!

  1. That is how I carry my Nantucket Basket, but alas, I carry my main bag on my shoulder but pushed towards my back like a pack.

    1. Oh, I love Nantucket Baskets! Aren't they amazing? In the past, I also carried my main bag on my shoulder, but then I would sometimes carry it in the crook of my arm, just as an experiment. It was so interesting to see how it changed the way I walked and talked with people when my hands were free. Perhaps you might try carrying your main bag like a basket once in a while, just to see how it feels. I'd love to hear about your impressions! xo Jamie

  2. I wear a slightly larger bracelet which makes my wrist look delicate.

  3. I finally got a bag worthy of carrying on the crook of my arm. First it was difficult but its kind of like walking heels, it changes the way you walk, your head is a held a bit higher, you feel more like a lady.

But old habits die hard and I still prefer a shoulder bag for the ease when shopping and carrying stuff. I guess I would call this "schlepping" with a bag.

hmmm, maybe I need to go get that bag back out and get back into the habit. :)

    1. Dear Jenifer--I love what you have to say about your bag changing the way you walk and feeling more like a lady. Still, I completely understand the convenience of shopping with a shoulder bag. Perhaps you can make it a habit to hold your bag in the crook of your arm when it's not too full of things and then switch back and forth. When you're wearing heels that could be the subconscious reminder to hold your bag in the crook of your arm. Just a thought. Thank you so much for following my blog! Love, Jamie

  4. I have a Chanel Classic Flap that my husband bought me ages ago, and usually wore it with the chain long, but I love what you said about toting one's handbag around like a little basket and have changed my M.O.!

  5. As an "older" woman :) I have always carries my handbag in the crook of my arm. If it's good enough for Queen Elizabeth...
Of course, I haven't worked out the Queen's "handbag signal system" with my husband-for some reason he thinks it's silly. :)
